Moto-Technique Training Services

D.S.A. Approved Training Body

Motorcycling is a skill which needs to be carefully mastered to enable a lifetime of safe and enjoyable travel. Simply learning to pass the test is not enough; we aim for all our customers to become competent, knowledgable riders, able to demonstrate a high level of awareness and anticipation. small bike rh

To achieve this our courses are geared towards customers getting as much mileage as possible covered during training, in a wide variety of traffic conditions. For this reason we do not offer "intensive" courses for new riders; instead we prefer the traditional approach of lessons spread over a few weeks, giving the customer time to absorb what they are learning, and reflect upon it between lessons. This has been found to be the most effective method of learning to become a competent motorcyclist. small bike rh

The first step for new riders is Compulsory Basic Training. This begins with the basics being learnt in a safe, off-road environment, along with theory and understanding of roadcraft. Once a satisfactory standard is reached, riders venture out onto public roads, with a maximum of 2 pupils per instructor. Once a rider has passed their CBT course, they have a choice of which route they take to their test.
Please see the Driving Standards Agency flow chart for an explanation of the possibilities available:Motorcycle Chart.. ..or....Moped Chart small bike lhWarning! - Large Images!

Lessons on either 125cc or 600/650cc machines (Direct Access) are for 2.25 hours (135 minutes) with a maximum group size of 3 customers (usually 2) per instructor for 125cc lessons, and 2 customers per instructor for Direct Access lessons. Although some organisations offer a ratio of 1 instructor per customer, this is always for shorter lessons, typically 1 hour. We have found that pupils benefit more from the longer lesson times which our group sizes allow. Obviously, any one customer will not be on the "lead" bike for the entire lesson, but of course the instructor's comments can be heard by all members of the group, and customers tend to learn by noticing the other riders' actions, as well as thinking about their own riding. Having said that, we do not believe in using the large groups (5 or more pupils per instructor) that some organisations do. small bike lh

As customers approach their test date, we encourage them to increase their experience by hiring out a 125cc machine for a day, or half-day, and riding on their own. This tends to highlight any areas of concern, which the customer can then ask the instructor to work on specifically at their next lesson. Current hire rates are 45.00 per day (or part day) for a 125cc bike.

The bikes we use are standard Honda CG125's for normal lessons, and for Direct Access, the Kawasaki ER650, which is a simple lightweight machine with good visibility, making them ideal learners' bikes, yet still being very much "real" motorcycles. Please note that on direct access courses, the first few lessons will still tend to be on a 125cc machine, until we are satisfied that the customer is ready to progress to the larger machine. This is for the customer's benefit; there is no point paying the extra cost of lessons on the larger bike whilst still mastering basic roadcraft which can be learnt just as well on the smaller bikes.
